Highway Improvements Support Regeneration of Market Square, Dover

Charles & Associates (C&A) supported Kent County Council and Dover District Council in the successful regeneration of Dover’s historic Market Square. Appointed to deliver highway improvements, C&A’s role covered the project from initial concept design through to on-site completion.

The objective of the project was to repurpose Dover’s historic Market Square as a hub connecting the local community and tourists alike and to create a multipurpose events space. Central to the public realm enhancements was the replacement of the existing dated fountain with a new, modern water feature — a key focal point that now sits proudly at the centre of the revitalised square and which C&A helped incorporate.

As part of our commission, we provided expertise in highways, public realm and pavement design, along with comprehensive drainage solutions, updated signage, and the introduction of new waiting restriction markings. Our team also supported the scheme by obtaining and responding to a series of Road Safety Audits to ensure a safe and accessible environment for all users.

The improvements to Market Square are expected to significantly boost footfall, attract new investment, and create a lively space for events, helping to secure a brighter future for Dover’s town centre.
