Valley Gardens Project Completed in Brighton

Phase 3 of Valley Gardens active scheme in Brighton has now been completed, marking an important milestone in the ongoing transformation of the city’s transport network. C&A were pleased to contribute to the project by providing traffic modelling to support the scheme.

Valley Gardens is part of Brighton & Hove City Council’s wider vision to create a greener, better-connected city centre, with improved public spaces and more opportunities for sustainable travel.

The scheme will improve connections between the city centre and seafront, creating a more accessible and attractive environment for pedestrians and cyclists while improving the wider transport network.

Supporting active travel through traffic modelling

A key feature of the scheme is the replacement of the former Palace Pier roundabout with a signalised junction. This change enables active travel movements with better crossing facilities around the seafront and city centre for pedestrians and cyclists.

C&A worked with Brighton & Hove City Council and Project Centre to support the development and assessment of the scheme. Our work included extensive microsimulation traffic modelling using Paramics Discovery, allowing different highway layout options to be tested and their potential effects on traffic movements to be assessed.

The modelling incorporated updated traffic flows, bus services, traffic signals and road restrictions, helping officers and councillors understand the implications of the proposals and inform decisions about the scheme’s design.

In addition to the modelling, C&A undertook a business case appraisal and contributed to the scheme’s environmental assessment.

We are pleased to have supported the project through our traffic modelling expertise and to have contributed to a scheme focused on improving travel connections and supporting more sustainable journeys in Brighton.
