C&A’s Transport Planning team is celebrating a hat-trick of appeal successes in as many months. Across all three projects, a consistent theme emerged which was our application of transport policy and design experience to reach pragmatic solutions and unlock residential development.
In Alton, Hampshire, the Planning Inspectorate (PINS) allowed Foreman Homes’ appeal for a 26-home scheme. A key factor in the decision was the scheme’s design, which was found to successfully avoid a car-dominated layout.
Similarly in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, an infill development on brownfield land was approved. Here, reduced parking provision, often a contentious issue, was accepted due to the site’s highly sustainable location, with close proximity to the town centre and strong public transport connections.
Meanwhile, in Central Bedfordshire, the Planning Inspectorate approved Reserved Matters for a backland development. The decision confirmed that the proposed access arrangements were both safe and suitable, addressing a common concern for this type of site.
Charlie Guille, Associate in Charles & Associate’s Transport team, commented:
“We welcome each of these decisions. These proposals make effective use of land within existing settlements and bring forward homes in sustainable locations, in accordance with the NPPF”.
These successes reinforce C&A’s ability to navigate complex transport challenges and support sustainable growth by aligning transport strategy with good design principles and national planning policy. They also highlight how expert input at the right stage can help overcome perceived constraints and bring forward development.
